Independent Diplomat (ID) is a unique non-profit organisation which offers advice in diplomatic strategy and technique to governments and political groups. We are seeking applications from experienced diplomats to assist with our operations at the United Nations in New York, based in our office in the East Village. Applicants should have experience of the UN in New York, especially the Security Council, and be authorised to work in the US. Applicants with 10-15 years formal diplomatic experience with either a national government or international institution dealing with political issues, or other substantial relevant work experience, are especially encouraged to apply. This opportunity is for part-time work in the first instance but may lead to full-time work in the longer run. Washington D.C. - Fall 2009 Independent Diplomat is seeking an intern to start work in its Washington, DC office in September 2009 to assist with policy research and general office administration. Applications close at 5pm (DC time) on Friday 3 July 2009. Independent Diplomat (ID) is a unique non-profit venture in the world of international relations, diplomacy and conflict prevention. Staffed by former diplomats, international lawyers and other experts in international relations, ID offers independent and confidential advice and assistance on diplomatic technique and strategy to governments, international institutions, non-governmental organisations and political groups. Independent Diplomat has offices in New York, London, Washington, Brussels and Addis Ababa. Its Washington office is headed by Soren Jessen-Petersen, former Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General in Kosovo. ID internships provide an excellent opportunity to be closely involved in a fast-growing international organisation working at the cutting edge of international affairs and diplomacy. Internships are voluntary and unpaid, but home-to-office travel expenses will be reimbursed. Independent Diplomat cannot provide immigration support or visa sponsorship. Internship details The internship is to commence on September 1, 2009 for an agreed duration of four to six months. ID prefers that its interns be available to work a minimum of 20 hours a week. Relevant skills The successful candidate will be professional, and have a strong knowledge and demonstrated interest in international affairs and diplomatic relations, especially the United Nations and other international institutions. He or she should also be familiar with the Washington political scene and the workings of Congress. Above all, candidates should exhibit an enthusiasm for conflict prevention and dispute resolution and the mission of Independent Diplomat more broadly. Successful candidates will hold a relevant degree. Fluency in English is essential. IT skills and fluency in another official UN language would be an advantage. In order to meet the increasing demand for our services in the process of EU and NATO accession, we are keen to recruit experienced (including retired) diplomats with background in this specific field. We are especially interested in former officials with substantial senior diplomatic experience in Euro-Atlantic integration, who would be available for a few days a month, or on a full-time basis, to assist with or help manage one or more of our projects.
