One of the most politically contentious exercises of recent decades finally got under way on Thursday: the Iraq war inquiry chaired by Sir John Chilcot, a former senior official at the Northern Ireland office. The risk to the reputation of Tony Blair, the prime minister who took the UK into this war of choice and who will be called to testify, is evident. The danger for the successor Labour government of Gordon Brown in the run-up to a general election is no less great, at a time when a British public that had already been hostile or sceptical about the war has turned surly and deeply undeferential.
