Radio Netherlands-Carne Ross interviewed
Broadcast as part of The State We're In
19 March 2009
For 15 years, Carne Ross was fast tracked in the British Foreign
Service. But the higher he went, the harder he worked to secure his
country's interests around the world, the more he felt those interests
went against his own sense of what was right. Britain's decision to
agree that Iraq may have weapons of mass destruction was the last
straw. Ross had worked for four years in this field and knew that his
country was making a wrong decision, so he quit. Carne Ross is not the
first diplomat to make the decision to flush away a great career. But
perhaps he's the first to come up with the innovative idea to go
freelance. The organization he founded, Independent Diplomat hires
itself out to groups who are seeking a voice in the international
diplomatic forum, something that's surprisingly difficult to do.
