Frequently Asked Questions

Ethical criteria

Independent Diplomat holds itself and its partners to strict ethical criteria. We work only with groups that:

  • Are invested in a diplomatic process and/or represent wider constituencies who are affected by such processes, but whose voices are currently excluded or marginalized;
  • Observe international law;
  • Refuse to support those promoting or engaging in unlawful violence;
  • Protect human rights;
  • Adhere to the rule of law, including democratic and accountable governance;
  • Commit to engaging in diplomacy to achieve their objectives.

Independent Diplomat conducts regular ethical reviews of ongoing partnerships and may suspend or terminate relationships for breaches of ethical criteria.

Due Diligence

Before engaging with prospective partners, ID conducts due diligence based on:

  • Background Research: Comprehensive analysis of the situation and prospective partner;
  • External Consultation: Verification with reputable organizations and experts with local knowledge (e.g. international organizations, NGOs, trusted governments);
  • Sanctions compliance: ID cannot engage with parties that do not comply with US, EU, UK or UN Security Council sanctions regimes.

Assessment Criteria

We evaluate potential partnerships based on:

  • Risk of conflict escalation and our potential to reduce such risk;
  • Disadvantages faced in international diplomacy (resources / experience / power);
  • Capacity to engage with and benefit from our support;
  • Potential conflicts of interest with existing operations;
  • Alignment with ID's ethical criteria.
